The Budget Debate in the Parliament of SVG continues to take dramatic twist and turns. Today, Vincentians witnessed a first, an apology from the PM to a member of the Opposition!

In a rare act of contrition, PM Ralph Gonsalves has apologised to Daniel Cummings. He was forced to do so for and on behalf of Montgomery Daniel who had made some unsavoury remarks regarding a back injury now plaguing Mr Cummings.

According to reports, Montgomery Daniel in a derisive manner, poked fun at Cummings’s condition. Needless to say, the distasteful remarks did not go down well with anyone. At the end of his presentation, Daniel attempted to express regret for his remarks. He claimed that he meant no malice. However, he stopped short of making a direct apology as was necessary in the circumstances.

By this time, the members of the Opposition had left the House in protest. This led to a shortening of the evening’s proceedings, since no one on the Government’s side was prepared to debate after Daniel had concluded his presentation.

The PM was then forced to move for the suspension of the sitting just after 7 pm. This was much earlier than anyone had anticipated.

Just before moving the motion, Prime Minister Gonsalves apologised unreservedly to Mr Cummings for the unfortunate remarks made by Daniel. Unfortunately, neither Cummings nor any other member of the Opposition was in the House to hear the PM’s apology!

He was not forced. That’s what LEADERSHIP IS ALL ABOUT.
