How much would the Royal Wedding cost the Vincentian tax payers? By Amor Rodney

The countdown is underway: There’s just over a week to go before Prince William marry Kate Middleton in London’s Westminster Abbey. This is supposed to be the mother of all weddings! But resist the urge to swoon and forget the romance for a minute as we take a closer look at the local economics of the royal wedding.

The wedding is estimated to cost the British economy 5 billion pounds or approximately EC480 billion.  That kind of money can build 5 international airports the size of Grantley Adams in Barbados.  This is indeed an obscene sum for a nuptial that might last as long as Miss Janey fire! The tax payers of St. Vincent will contribute a sizable sum as the Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves and his family have accepted the invitation to attend!  How much? We will never know!

Gonsalves is a strange creature! It came to many as a complete shock when he decided to accept the invitation.  After all, as an avowed anti-colonialist, why would Gonsalves be sucking up to the Queen and her a family at a wedding of all places? Given, his anti-colonial stance, Gonsalves should have nothing to do with this Royal Wedding.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is experiencing perhaps some of its worst days from an economic and fiscal standpoint.  Productivity is extremely low as traditional areas of economic activity continue to the decline.  There is no manufacturing to speak about; agriculture, particularly bananas, is practically no more; tourism is struggling to keep afloat; and the much vaunted financial services sector is utterly stagnant.

The struggling economy has had a negative impact on government’s finance.  Gonsalves himself admits that we are in for hard times.  Indeed, owing to declining revenue and a massive debt little is there to do anything. This is reflected in the bad roads, deficiencies in the health service and the failure of the government to address social basic services in many areas in the wake of two major natural disasters.

Yet, despite these bleak circumstances, the Prime Minister of this country finds the time and the resources to attend the Royal Wedding with his wife and children in tow!  No doubt, this is going to cost Vincentians a lot! Can the country afford it? Is Gonsalves for real?

How much will the Royal Wedding benefit vincentians?

They claim that opposites attract but there is a poster here who is behaving just like Ralph Gonsalves, so the saying birds of a feather flock together seems better suited here. She manages to promote herself as Miss Intelligent while directly attacking others declaring that they are not intelligent. This is something which the true brain doesn’t do he or she does not attack persons but rather, ideas. She claims that the ULP are better at handling critique than the NDP, well this is a crass lie as evidenced by the ugly name-calling coming from the ULP mouthpieces on FM radio, not to mention the any job dismissals without cause.
    Oh for some finesse!

Don’t sweat the small stuff. I think it’s great D Comrade is going to this event. ALTHOUGH I DON’T CARE FOR THE ROYAL FAMILY DUE TO THEIR HORRENDOUS COLONIAL HISTORY. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and our Prime Minister should represent us in the spirit of the commonwealth. Do you think the nitpicking and obsessing over D Comrade’s travel expenses would stop him from his international excursions? Do you think common Vincentians care about the traveling sprees of govt officials (although they should, because of the national economic factor)? Will this type of topic propel the NDP to victory in the next election? Please discuss more substantive issues, and do some BADLY NEEDED internal cleaning. WORK ON THE THUSIAN QUESTION AND PLEASE RELIEVE THE INEFFICIENT MR EUSTACE OF HIS LAZY LEADERSHIP!

“Don’t sweat the small stuff” says the lady who dumped on Eustace for taking a vacation.

So let me get this straight, the “Thusians” constitute a “substantive issue”, Are they ruining or conspiring against the country? Did you come up with this, or is it as a result of “Aunty Nichola’s” hypnosis …..a hyper-partisan can and will always push one angle.

As much as I disagree with some of your stances and views, I must admit that you seem to be beholden to no party.. well at least until Aunty ULP had her way with you…………3,2,1…….

Vincent why are you constantly up in my grill? You are a pathological blind follower of the losing crew..There’s no political or ideological flexibility on your part.. It’s your way or the highway. You are a compulsive agitator for a losing strategy and the victory of your current team is stillborn. You are the ones with the problem..NOT ME… Instead of running around on social networks and on blogs picking fights with everyone who DARES to disagree with you. Please use your time wisely and help restructure and rebuild your team! Listen if I choose to become a representative I would be in SVG campaigning and you can be darn sure that I WOULD WIN! Please use your time wisely since you are so passionate(as you claim) and do something meaningful or accept that your PM would be D Comrade FOREVER…. I guess you are blind;I’ve criticized both parties equally so what’s your point?

I don’t know if you are on another planet Vincent, but in case you are, let me inform you THAT THE ULP IS IN POWER AT THIS POINT, AND BY THE LOOKS OF IT THEY WILL BE FOR A VERY LONG TIME TO COME! I don’t need to defend them, they are incredibly productive in the eyes of the majority of Vincentians, and they seem to be the better choice, that’s why they are there. If I were a supporter of them, I would not need to be posting or commenting on anything politically whether on this blog or anywhere else. I would be happily relaxing in my own world. The problem with the NDP is they are very narrow minded, politically unintelligent, and deficient in their ability to handle critique. You are disgustingly of that same stock. My goal is to seek what is best for my country, and to make sure we have a strong opposition team to keep the ruling ULP in check! I am not a blind follower of anyone. I have a right to critique any member of my govt, whether it’s NDP or ULP. You are not a part of the solution YOU ARE A PART OF THE PROBLEM! The NDP needs to purge people like the thusians and MR EUSTACE if it wants to be taken seriously. Dealing with people like you make me feel like I’m on the planet of the dumb and deaf… Oh I forgot YOU ARE DEAF.. You seem incapable of understanding anything from a strategic perspective.. You are in every discussion touting and debating the same useless point like a wound up toy, and you are convinced that you are brandishing your intellectual prowess.. YOU ARE NOT A BRILLIANT PERSON! Intelligence is exhibited by one’s ability to think creatively outside of the box, it is the ability to grasp conceptually other complex perspectives, etc. You are the complete opposite of that. You are NEVER going to become a prominent political figure in MY country with your bizarre and compulsive disorder, so please make your plans to pursue your ambitions elsewhere! You can allude to my family associations all you want. You seem to think that a successful woman who disagrees with your mode of gangster thinking.. must be foolish of you, SVG is a small Island and I happen to have relatives in both parties; I am not a member of any political gang, and frankly the ULP don’t give a damn about my critique of them because they have a country to run.. actually they are willing to debate and intimately discuss every aspect of my accusations of them.. constructively.. they are very organized, and that doesn’t mean that I favor them..I have thoroughly discussed the the amendments of the new bills and all of my grievances with them.. I have to give it to them, they “seem” to be all about the issues!

“…they are incredibly productive in the eyes of the majority of Vincentians, and they seem to be the better choice, that’s why they are there. ”

No doubt many view them as “productive”, however if they were as productive as you suggest, why such a slender majority?

Helen, vincentian elections are not only won on merit, that only account for about half of the elctorate, elections are won by charisma and the effectiveness of the campaign.

The ULP launched an extremely effective localized campaign, in conjunction with massive distribution of lumber and galvanzie, this is why they won.

As previously stated, what factors can account for the threadbare victory? If they were so popular, why were four seats extracted from their majority? Why did they the central Leeward seat by less than 200 votes? Why did the more informed, and better educated urban voters not vote for the ULP?

Extrapolate what you will from this pattern, my conclusion is that voters who voted for issues voted for the NDP, those who votes on charisma and for immidaite material gain, voted for the ULP. Granted there will be exceptions, inclusive of the established base of each party.

Wonderful summation… NEWS FLASH.. Every political party engage in bribery.. NDP has done it also, so please don’t use the galvanize and lumber example. I have witnessed NDP candidates giving those away like crazy for votes, in past elections. Are you telling me that Mr Eustace didn’t have a negative effect on the voters with his amnesia about the International Airport debacle and other silly antics? You can debate statistics all you want, if you don’t pull the plug on grandpa soon and discipline the miscreants in your party, there would be no victory for you next time around.

If you find solace in the “winning by a slim margin” theory then you probably might pull off a narrow loss in 2015. Good luck! Maybe we should bet on this one… Anyway you are very exhausting to debate with, because you tend to make the same argument endlessly; you also made a mess on my facebook wall with your comments so …PEACE OUT!

I do not own the monopoly on intelligence, nor do I aspire for, or am even interested in political office.

I leave you with a message you transmitted to me via facebook…this is of course when our views converged…..

“Are we looking at a future Prime Minister(you)? My young brother, I am very impressed by your political acumen and your literary dexterity! You are the type of intellectual talent that I would definitely be honored to have a political debate with on my FB wall. “

      • Posted by Helen Alexander on May 5, 2011 at 1:07 pm

LOL… That’s before I saw the disaster you were whipping up all over the blogs… Vincent how cheap of you… Have you ever learned that what is said in private should be kept private? While you are at it I ALSO ASKED YOU IF YOU ARE SAADISS ON VINCIKALALOO, YOU SAID NO. HOWEVER, you are too similar to be different. ALSO IT IS VERY STRANGE THAT WHENEVER YOU ARE EXPOSING YOUR TRUE SELF, SADDISS IS NO WHERE. What is it Vincent you don’t have any buller bwoys to rant about today?.. LMAO..Why are you saving my messages Vincent? Thank goodness I didn’t have a love affair with you or you would have the tapes on CNN! LOL!!

      • Posted by Helen Alexander on May 5, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Do you also know how many people I’ve told they can become presidents, doctors, prime ministers etc? I believe in positive affirmation, a lot of black folks have a deficiency in their self confidence structure. Telling you that you could be a PM and giving you the job are two different things. This is a message I sent to you at the very beginning when I read 2 of your articles, before I witnessed your political rapport! What made me take a hard observation of you is when you were joyfully defending some NDP guys who beat two women on the leeward end of SVG because they supported the ULP! You claimed their injuries were fake. I even allowed you the privilege of opining on my FB wall and you were very inappropriate with your comments by invoking other people’s names into your mess. Anyway SAADISS A.K.A VINCENT CHARLES, you will not have that privilege any more. LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH!

      • Posted by Vincent on May 6, 2011 at 12:24 pm

Well to you Helen, I am many things, the lastest of course being “Sadis”….what I am not however, is the laughing stock of the Vincikallaloo / facebook polical community….that honor my dear, falls squarely on your lap………crazy bitch….. 3,2,1…..

      • Posted by Helen Alexander on May 6, 2011 at 2:19 pm

This is the last response I m going to waste on you.. I couldn’t resist, you are too funny… Well some of the most remarkable people on the planet have been called crazy so I guess i’m in good company! What political community are you talking about… NDP? Your little extreme NDP clique? Of course they are laughing, that’s all they do… laugh, lie, fabricate, form cults? Accuse people of rape, when all yuh have ministers guilty of de same things! That’s why all yuh can’t win shit! YOU CAN BE SURE THE ULP AREN’T LAUGHING… They are smart; they are not perfect, but they know how to appreciate and invest in getting what they want done. It’s good that I can give you some comic relief, after all your blunders you need a good laugh. I AM NOT REFERRING TO THE SMARTER OLD SCHOOL, RESPECTFUL WING OF THE NDP. Hey Vincent the brilliant NDP representatives, they are laughing at you, your thusian friends; they are repulsed by y’all, AND ALL OF DEM AGREE WITH ME… WHO’S THE JACKASS NOW? LMAO!!!

Why should any body be shocked? By now we should know that Gonsalves stand for nothing. And he knows that he can do that because he is leader of the most understanding and forgiving set of people in the world. He is perfectly right to run off with his family to royal wedding even after viewing the scene of destruction in the North where the people voted for him heavily, setting him on the rest of us backs once again! His action is grotesque!

    • Posted by progressive woman on April 26, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Catherine, I dont know where in SVG you reside. I am from the north of SVG which was devastated during the recent floods. I am from this part of the country that “voted heavily” for the PM.I want to say to you Catherine that I (and I’m sure that I speak for the majority of persons living in our area) do not have a problem with the PM travelling overseas at this time. He visited us the day after the floods and before he left, and has everything under control. Infact, everything is in competent hands while he is away and I’m sure he’s working on our behalf while overseas.

  5. Posted by progressive woman on April 22, 2011 at 10:15 pm

By the 2ay, I think the PM explained this before after he sued E G Lynch…that he does not pay for his family with tax payers money. Check your facts

  6. Posted by progressive woman on April 22, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Dr Gonsalves has also used the opportunity in travelling overseas, to seek international aid for SVG in the wake of the disaster that struck us recently. I am sure that if it were for the wedding alone, he would not have gone….killing many birds with one stone…give the damn man a chance

  7. Posted by no nonsense on April 22, 2011 at 9:19 pm

The Ralph haters will stop at nothing. What you guys fail to realize is that he is the prime minister of SVG. The Queen is the head of the state of SVG. The Comrade never said anything bad about the Queen, in fact, he commended her highly when he was seeking the YES VOTE for the new constitution (you can revisit any of his speeches made on the campaign). The Comrade is known to use his own money on occasions and I am sure if he spends $1. of the government’s money we will all know about it. Let Mitchell and the NDP tell us about the millions at Ottley Hall!!!!!

  8. Posted by The Truth on April 21, 2011 at 3:10 pm

Ralph Gonsalves loves the attention and spoils of capitalism…oops I mean imperialism. He was all smiles in his picture with Obama a few months back as well. Having a Prime Minister who is so star struck is a little embarrasing. If it was not for all of the Iranian, Venezuelan and Libyan tourists I might be more upset about it. (kidding of course). We may not agree with you Mr Gonsalves, but at least stick to your principles.

    • Posted by laybahhag on April 30, 2011 at 9:54 pm

Stick to your principles at the expense of lost opportunity for vincentians? We see this as a grand opportunity to lobby for assistance, why not seize the day?

  9. Posted by killer on April 21, 2011 at 1:42 pm

The fork tongue PM of SVG does not concern how much this cost taxpayers. His stance on being anticolonial is a big lie. He will continue ride our backs until thy kingdom come. Why? We love him and the pressure his regime has brought on us.
